The moss in The Enchanted Forest in The Cove is one of our most precious treasures. It transforms our boulders into something out of a fairy tale. However, we have a serious situation: some of our guests and children have been removing this moss from the rocks. While it might seem like a small gesture, moss is not like most plants, and the damage can last a lifetime.
1. Recovery Takes Decades, Not Days
Unlike the grass in your yard that grows back in a week, moss regeneration is a glacial process. Scientific research shows that it can take 20 years or more just to cover a bare rock surface under ideal, damp conditions. In many cases, if the moss is significantly damaged or uprooted, it can take up to 100 years to fully recover. When a patch is pulled off, that boulder is effectively scarred for a century.
2. It Lacks a Traditional Root System
Mosses are ancient plants that don't have deep roots. They attach to our boulders using tiny hair-like anchors called rhizoids. When these are ripped away, the moss cannot simply be "replanted." Once the biological bond is broken, the rock is left bare and vulnerable.
